Fatality Free Friday 2026
Every page matters. Choosing safety, changing futures.
This Fatality Free Friday, hosted by the Australian Road Safety Foundation, we are reminded that behind every road death there is a human story.
New data out of Queensland gives us a powerful, tangible reason to reflect on this year’s theme. The state has achieved a sustained, 36% reduction in unrestrained vehicle occupant fatalities over the last two years (2024-2025) compared to the previous four year average.
When you step back from the statistics, here is what changing behaviours, saving lives actually means:
– 29 fewer deaths over two years than if the trend continued.
– Unrestrained fatalities dropped from 15% of all road deaths down to 9%.
– 29 individuals who made it home to their families, their jobs and their communities.
Queensland is home to the world’s longest-running seatbelt enforcement program. Today we celebrate sustainable results in changed behaviour, leading to lives saved. When drivers make the conscious choice to buckle up, they aren’t just obeying the law, they are looking out for their communities, setting an instinctual safety example for the next generation and ensuring their own story doesn’t end on a tragic footnote.
