World First Bidirectional Enforcement in New South Wales

March 18, 2026

Beginning 1 March 2026, Transport for NSW activated bidirectional enforcement for mobile phone and seatbelt violations. This increases the number of vehicles being assessed, strengthening anywhere, anytime enforcement capability.

Over the past seven years of partnership, NSW has observed a 93% reduction in illegal mobile phone use – resulting in just 1 infringement being issued for every 1,200 vehicles assessed.

This next evolution enhances detection capabilities of distracted driving and seatbelt non-compliance in both directions of travel, supporting sustained behaviour change at scale as traffic volumes grow.

By expanding proven enforcement capability, Transport for New South Wales drives the innovation-led evolution of road safety, building on demonstrated results and reinforcing a data-driven approach to reducing road trauma.
