National Road Safety Week 2024: Drive in the Moment + Avoid Distraction

May 10, 2024

Today’s theme for National Road Safety Week is ‘Drive in the Moment + Avoid Distraction.’ Acusensus was founded in 2018 to combat the growing distracted driving epidemic.

Distracted driving is one of the most dangerous driving behaviours, one of the Fatal Five.

It has been identified as a problem for many years but the dramatic growth of smartphone use globally has led to an increased desire to produce a practical, operational solution to deliver long-term, wide-scale driver behaviour change. This began the inception of Acusensus and its patented distracted driving enforcement solutions.

Enforcement is a proven method to minimise distracted driving – leading to changed behaviours and lives saved. Since the founding of Acusensus, the ‘Heads-Up’ solution has been delivered in pilots and programs worldwide in over ten countries, including the UK and the USA.

The success of the ‘Heads-Up’ solution is most evident in New South Wales and Queensland. Since the mobile phone enforcement camera program commenced in NSW in December 2019 to the end of 2022, there has been a sixfold reduction in the rate of camera-detected mobile phone offences in the state. This is a true indication that enforcement works and behaviours can be changed. This results in a decline in road fatalities, with the NSW road fatalities reducing by 0.9 deaths per 100,000 per annum from 4.4 to 3.5.

Similar success is also seen in QLD, after all sites became active in December 2022, a 21% improved road fatality change occurred in the state compared to the rest of Australia.

Acusensus is proud to reduce the occurrence of dangerous driver behaviours. We must always remember to focus on the road while driving. Distracted driving is a phenomenon that can be preventable and minimising distracted driving habits will save lives.
