National Road Safety Week: Take Care on Regional Roads

May 24, 2023

On Sunday, May 21, 2023, the National Road Safety Week 2023 theme is ‘Take Care on Regional Roads.’

May 2023 marks the start of the deployment of Acusensus Harmony TS1 solutions across Queensland, which Acusensus is doing in partnership with Transport Main Roads. Deployments currently focus on regional and rural roads.

The Acusensus Harmony TS1 solution is a high-tech speed enforcement system designed to give authorities the tool to drive behavioural change and is deployed to discourage speeding behaviour.

With almost two in three road deaths occurring on regional roads, research has detailed why all Australians have a personal responsibility to take greater action:

  1. High-risk rural roads are used by almost all Australians (91%) at least once a year
  2. More than a third of drivers utilise regional roads at least once a week
  3. Personal travel is the number one reason (60%) for driving on regional roads
  4. Living in the area accounts only for 27% of reasons for driving on regional roads.

“We have been innovating solutions in road safety for many years and recognise that there is still more work to be done, particularly when it comes to educating motorists in more remote settings. But drivers can do their bit to keep themselves and other road users safe by following a few simple rules: buckle up, put away the phone and don’t speed.”

Alexander Jannink, Acusensus Founder and Managing Director

As well as thinking about rural road safety, the Australian Road Safety Foundation dedicates September to Rural Road Safety Month.
